The trillions of microbes inside of our gut, the so-called microbiota, play different beneficial functions: for example, they help us absorb nutrients and can even produce nutrients themselves. 

Microbiota can also play a role in our weight, whether we’re lean or obese, and how effectively we can lose weight. 

The two most detected bacterial groups in the body are Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Researchers have found that the ratio between them can play an important role in fat metabolism: normal-weight people tend to have a higher rate of Bacteroidetes while overweight people have a higher rate of Firmicutes.
